Featured Artist

The "Pulling Weeds" music and lyrics were written by Kurt Thomas Humann. Kurt also sang the vocals and played the guitar.

Dean Garvey of AudioLiveStudio.com added the percussion at a later date, and is the producer and recording, mixing, and mastering engineer.

"Pulling Weeds" was recorded in a private home dining room with excellent acoustics with portable recording equipment from AudioLiveStudio.com.

To book a performance date for Kurt Thomas Humann, please text or call 661-281-0123 or email info@AudioLiveStudio.com. Text or email is preferred since phone calls typically are sent directly to voicemail during recording sessions.

Note: there is a subtle low frequency drum beat at 78 Hz after the guitar intro that is best heard with headphones, earbuds, or a quality stereo system. Many cell phone speakers do not adequately reproduce the low frequencies of this drum beat or the lowest notes from a bass guitar (low E string is 41 Hz).

Live Audio Services

For small and medium size special events where high quality sound is important, we provide high fidelity sound reinforcement and amplification in stereo or mono, featuring:

  • Behringer Wing Compact mixer/recorder with 24 pre-amp inputs for microphones and instruments or line level audio sources, all with pre or post effect equalization with spectrum analysis.
  • Remote mixer control with private WiFi to ensure an excellent mix by an experienced audio engineer with spectrum analysis where your listeners are located.
  • Eight separately controllable mono outputs or four separately controllable stereo outputs with equalization with spectrum analysis.
  • All 24 inputs can be recorded at CD quality (16 bit samples, 44,100 or 48,000 samples/second) in the mixer and/or routed to a laptop for recording with Steinberg Cubase Pro 15.
  • Two Mackie Thump 215 powered 1400 watt (129 dB SPL, which is similar to a military jet aircraft take-off from aircraft carrier with afterburner at 50 ft) speakers with frequency response from 40 Hz (the lowest frequency on a bass guitar is 41 Hz) to 23,000 Hz, which can be configured as one stereo channel or two mono channels. The equalization for each speaker can be individually configured with spectrum analysis
  • Eight XLR microphones with boom stands.
  • High resolution USB-C input for connection to a cell phone or other audio player.
  • With prior notice, additional equipment, such as additional powered speakers or in-ear monitoring for performers, can be provided.

Typical events are music festivals, weddings, dances, church services, funerals, rallies, business conventions, exhibitions, or any event where high quality sound is important.

Studio Audio Services

As an alternative to a dedicated high cost recording studio building, our portable high fidelity (CD quality, 16 bit samples, 44,100 or 48,000 samples/second) recording equipment can transform a suitable location into a temporary cost-effective high quality recording studio. The factors that are important for excellent recordings are :

  • A low reverb time is desirable for most music other than choral music. Typically a reverb time of 0.5 seconds or less is best for recording in order to obtain a very clean sound. Reverb time 60 is the time in seconds that an audio impulse, such as a hand clap, reduces in volume by 60 dB. This article provides a good explanation of reverb time.
  • Flat frequency response is desirable. The size, shape, and materials in a room will affect frequency response. For example, a rectangular room with a tiled floor can sometimes act like an echo chamber. The lowest frequency on a bass guitar is 41 Hz, which has a wavelength of about 27 feet. A rectangular room that has a length or width of 27 feet, in addition to reflective surfaces, can appear to emphasize these low notes and create a muddy recording.
  • Very little (ideally none) background noise, such as street traffic and noisy air conditioners, are important.
  • There are some very good cell phone apps available to measure the acoustics of a room. Most cell phone microphones perform well for this function, however, it is also possible to connect a high fidelity microphone to most cell phones.
  • It is important to verify that the AC power is properly grounded. Electrical problems such as ground loops can create noise and are safety hazards. We can take measurements to verify this, however, if electrical repairs are needed you should contact a licensed electrician.
  • Examples of rooms that may perform well for recording are large private living or dining rooms with high ceilings with lots of wood and some carpeting, church santuaries, and restaraunt dining rooms.
  • We can provide an objective analysis of potential recording sites. Although music is quite subjective (we like what we like), there are technical reasons that music in certain rooms sound better.

Mixing, Mastering, and Production

After recording, the tracks must be mixed and mastered with care and expertise. The factors that are important for excellent mix, master, and final production are :

  • Vocals and instrument tracks typically do not have uniform volume. A compressor can be used to create a more uniform volume, or a track volume level can be increased or decreased as desired.
  • Frequency response is somewhat subject, however, the human voice and instruments create harmonics and transients that are very important to the character of the sound. Our equipment provides spectrum analysis at every critical stage, and we can view spectrograms as needed. For more information on the value of spectrograms, this video at 2:34 describes the tools we have available.
  • Special attention should be applied to ensure that critical tracks (such as vocal tracks) can be clearly heard and lyrics can be understood.
  • Special effects can enhance a mix. For example, by applying a stereo chorus and reverb to a mono track, you can obtain a full dimensional stereo sound over both channels.
  • After the mix has been completed, a recording needs to be mastered. Many techniques can be employed to obtain a high quality sound. The volume level should be normalized to an industry standard level, for example, for use in a Youtube video.
  • All recordings should have metadata embedded in the audio files (e.g. WAV or MP3), or video files, that identifies the names of the track, composer, lyric writer, main performers, and owner of the composition and recording.
  • We can provide high definition WAV files, MP3 files, stems (individual tracks that make up the recording), and even full musical scores that include each track with lyrics in PDF or MusicXML format.
  • We can provide Youtube compatible video files (or other video formats) with synchronized lyrics. If you do not have the appropriate video or images, we can create the video with licensed images or shoot video of your performance or recording session. All of our music is human generated.

If you plan to record original music that you own the rights to, please provide a written description of the music prior to our recording session.

If you plan to record cover songs for commercial purposes, please obtain the necessary licenses prior to our recording session.
